Beat the Heat: A Day in Mt Charleston

July 2024 was the hottest month in Vegas history! At 31 weeks pregnant, I've been on constant lookout for ways to beat the heat. With a toddler in tow it's still super important for us to get outside. This typically looks like Sunny and I spending endless hours at the pool. Thank goodness for swimming! Last weekend we took a day trip up to Mt Charleston where it was 75 and shady. About a 50 minute drive from our house, it's the perfect place to pack up for a picnic and enjoy a reprieve from our 110+ degree temps!

We drove just past the Fletcher Campground since the picnic area closes at 5 for campers and enjoyed our time wandering through the open area. We didn't have a specific hike in mind and just let Sunny roam free. She loved climbing on the rocks, running up and down the smaller hills and looking for birds and bugs.

Anytime she ventured somewhere too big for her body we redirected her most often by trying to spot a nearby dog. Fortunately, there were plenty! Nothing peaks her interest more than a four-legged woof with a floppy tongue.

We brought dinner for Sunny and mostly fed her on the go outside of a few brief moments of her happily sitting on a log. This girl is constantly on the move and we love nothing more than watching her take in the world around her. She's endlessly curious and exploratory, It's also great exercise for mom and dad!

It's definitely an extra effort to get up here and get outside but it was so worth it. We didn't have an agenda and enjoyed the slow pace without the pressure of a specific destination. I'm pretty determined to make another trip up here before the summer is over because there's just nothing more energizing then being outside *in cooler temps* with the people I love.

Just missing the dog! She would have loved it but we were babysitting another furry friend who struggles in the car so we let those two enjoy sleeping the afternoon away!
